Officer Donald Liu tried stopping a blue 2000 Audi A4 with a defective brake light on southbound Route 17 near G. Fried Carpets just after 2 p.m., but the car took off, Police Chief Kenneth Ehrenberg said Wednesday night.

The vehicle then exited onto the Garden State Parkway southbound at exit 163, he said.

"A short time later, the Audi attempted to merge onto Route 80 west where it spun out and hit a guard rail," the chief said.

The driver then tried backing up, hitting Liu's cruiser with his car, Ehrenberg said.

Liu and several backup officers took the driver -- identified as 18-year-old Andre Felix -- into custody, along with passenger Steven Pena, 20.

Both were later released without bail pending a court hearing on charges of eluding and with illegal possession of prescription pills.
