New York City’s record of 94 degrees was set in 1915. Newark’s record is 98, which goes back to 1964.
"[I] don’t think we get to 98 at Newark," meteorologist Joe Cioffi said, "but 90 to 95 will be the general range."
Interestingly, temperatures last year in Newark hit 98 on Sept. 8.
"A weak weather front is going to be moving through and stalling out just to our south and then coming back north Friday night into Saturday morning," Cioffi said. "There could be a downpour or two when the warm front goes by.
"Then Saturday is another hot and humid day with highs in the upper 80s to lower 90s."
The good news is that a cold front follows, with showers or a thunderstorm starting between midnight Saturday and 7 a.m. Monday, Cioffi said.
"As the day progresses Sunday we should see decreasing clouds and increasing amounts of sunshine with lower humidity and highs in the 80s," he said.
"Monday and Tuesday look nice with sunshine, comfortable conditions and highs in the 70s to near 80," Cioffi added.
