Paramus is coming of a 10-2 season, the winningest season in coach Dan Sabella's nine-year tenure. River Dell finished 8-4 last year and lost in the North 1 Group 3 state championship game to Sparta. The Golden Hawks are 37-11 over the past four years under veteran coach D.J. Nimphius.

Paramus reached the North 1 Group 4 championship game last year, falling to Pascack Valley in the title game, 22-6, at Giants Stadium. Paramus features running back Derek De La Cruz, who rushed for 1,160 yards and 16 touchdowns last year. The Spartans do have to find a quarterback to replace Tyler Smith, who threw for 1,283 yards and 10 touchdowns last year.

River Dell has been hit hard by graduation. Senior quarterback Dylan Connelly returns to lead the offense, and has a strong offensive line in front of him led by Jae Choi, Chris McMahon and Zak Bousada.

The Spartans and Golden Hawks both compete in the Big North Conference, a super conference of 40 public and private high schools in Northern New Jersey. Paramus plays in the Colonial Division, and River Dell in the Patriot Division.
