Report: 4 Bergen School Districts Among Those With Big Demographic Shifts

HALEDON, N.J. – Four Bergen and one Passaic County school district are among the 20 in the state that have experienced the greatest shift in demographics over the last two decades, according to a list released by NJ.com.

Throughout New Jersey, changes in demographics were “led by a surge in Hispanic students, who went from 14 percent of the public school population in 1998 to more than a quarter of it in 2016,” the story says.

The list is based on public school district data from between 1998 and 2016. Here are the Bergen and Passaic County school districts that made the list, their rankings accompanying data, according to NJ.com:

  • 20: Fairview Borough: The district had a total change of 79.1 percent from 1998 to 2016. The percent of Hispanic students grew 39 percent, while the percent of white students fell 38 percent.
  • 19: Moonachie: The district had a total change of 79.3 percent from 1998 to 2016. The percent of Hispanic students grew 38 percent, while the percent of white students fell 40 percent.
  • 18: Bogota (tie): The district had a total change of 80.8 percent from 1998 to 2016. The percent of Hispanic students grew 38 percent, while the percent of white students fell 41 percent.
  • 18: South Hackensack (tie): The district had a total change of 80.9 percent from 1998 to 2016. The percent of Hispanic students grew 37 percent, while the percent of white students fell 40 percent.
  • 16: Manchester Regional (Haledon, North Haledon, Prospect Park): The district had a total change of 82.2 percent from 1998 to 2016. The percent of Hispanic students grew 28 percent, while the percent of white students fell 39 percent.
