Passaic's Rodney Frelinghuysen Deals Trumpcare 'Mortal Blow'

PASSAIC COUNTY, N.J. — Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen (R) announced that he would vote against the GOP's bill to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act.

The U.S. Representative for New Jersey's 11th congressional district is the chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, and committee chairpersons typically vote in line with the House leadership.

The Hufftington Post described Frelinghuysen's move as a "potentially mortal blow" to Trumpcare, as the Republican leadership can only afford to lose 21 or 22 votes, according to the article.

“Seven years after enactment of Obamacare, I wanted to support legislation that made positive changes to rescue healthcare in America," Frelinghuysen said in a statement.

“Unfortunately, the legislation before the House today is currently unacceptable as it would place significant new costs and barriers to care on my constituents in New Jersey.

"In addition to the loss of Medicaid coverage for so many people in my Medicaid-dependent state, the denial of essential health benefits in the individual market raise serious coverage and cost issues.

“I remain hopeful that the American Health Care Act will be further modified. We need to get this right for all Americans.”

The vote is expected to take place Friday evening.
