PARAMUS, N.J. -- Republican leaders in the counties of Bergen and Passaic selected Oradell lawyer Fernando Alonso to be their replacement state Assembly candidate in the 38th Legislative District, according to northjersey.com.
Alonso, who has run two previous, unsuccessful campaigns, was unopposed as the party’s choice to replace Anthony Cappola, who quit the race last week, said northjersey.com
Cappola dropped out following disclosures that he had written a book called “Outrageous” that contained ethnic and racial slurs, northjersey.com said.
But it remains to be seen whether Republican leaders will be able to get Alonso on the Nov. 3 ballot because they will have to persuade a state Superior Court Judge in Paterson that it’s not too late to reprint ballots and discard several hundred vote-by-mail ballots that already have been cast, northjersey.com added.
Alonso said he was ready to run if the courts allow it. A hearing on the ballot dispute has been scheduled for next Wednesday, northjersey.com said.
