PARAMUS, N.J. -- ( UPDATE ) A severely injured dog dumped at the Oradell Animal Hospital in Paramus had to be put down, authorities said Monday.
"He had to be euthanized due to severity of injuries and to alleviate suffering," Bergen County SPCA Chief Roni Wildoner said
Authorities were still trying to find the owner of the 2-year-old Akita mix, who they believe came from in or around Mahwah or southern Rockland County, she said.
He was "covered in mud, soaking wet, with a swollen hind leg and wound that might suggest a tether of some type," Wildoner said.
The occupants of a black Lincoln Navigator with New York license plates came to the hospital around 5 p.m. Friday, giving conflicting stories of finding the wounded dog either in the woods in Mahwah or at a Rockland County construction site, Wildoner said.
They didn't go inside and left without providing any identification, she said.
If you recognize the Akita or have information that could help authorities, please contact the Bergen County SPCA: (201) 573-8900 .
