Police urge avoiding the area completely if you’re heading in either direction between Reservoir Avenue and Main Street, near Route 4.

You can negotiate your way through town, however, using Howland Avenue and either of a few streets.

The water pipe broke near Rutgers Place around 11:15 last night.

Emergency workers and utility crews responded after the utility line was ruptured. The line carries oil used to heat the water pipes so they don’t freeze.

Hazardous materials units were also on hand to deal with the oil spill. Sand was poured along the two-block stretch to soak it up.

Pedestrians are still able to get from one end of the closed road to the other.
