The man continued to follow them even after they made unexpected turns, and appeared to be circling them as they waited for officers at a gas station, Chief Dean Ackermann said.

Officers were able to locate the subject, a 35-year-old Hawthorne man, who said that he was merely out riding his bicycle and his presence at the same locations as the couple was nothing more than a coincidence.

"The man was warned that further actions of this nature could be considered as an act of harassment," Ackermann said. "As there were no lawful grounds to further detain the man, he was released once it was determined that there were no active warrants for his arrest."

The couple was encouraged to notify police if there is any repeated conduct of this nature, police said.
