The vehicles, minivans that have been modified to accommodate drivers or passengers that are disabled, allow their owners to experience the freedom of mobility and independence that others often take for granted.
Due to the modifications and expense of owning such vehicles, the training exercise included information on how to identify them, along with specialized extrication techniques.
The training also emphasized the importance of minimizing damage to the vehicle components when there are no life-threatening injuries, in order to save the owners from having to replace the vehicle instead of just making repairs.
The three wheelchair vans used in the training were donated by Fun Truck’n Mobility, a Saddle Brook-based company that sells, rents and repairs wheelchair accessible minivans and SUVs, as well as scooters, power wheelchairs and residential stair lifts.
The training was provided by Kevin Zitko, captain of the Washington Township Volunteer Fire Department and a certified mobility consultant at Fun Truck’n.
