PARAMUS, N.J. -- Paramus police chased down and arrested a Middlesex County man who they said claimed to be an officer and assauted a mall security guard after she caught him shoplifting a $54 bottle of cologne.
"I could get in trouble for this," 37-year-old Timothy Lynch of North Brunswick reportedly told the Abercrombie & Fitch loss prevention officer who grabbed him Saturday at the Garden State Plaza, Deputy Police Chief Robert Guidetti said Tuesday afternoon.
He also "displayed a Pennsylvania police badge," Guidetti said.
Lynch then asked to use the bathroom and turned on the officer on the way there, assaulting her and then running out the emergency exit into the parking lot, he said.
She chased him and he hit her again, refusing to be taken into custody, Guidetti said.
Other guards and Paramus police helped seize Lynch as he tried to cross Route 4, the deputy chief said.
Lynch was being held on $500 bail in the Bergen County Jail, charged with robbery and impersonating a police officer. A March 16 hearing was scheduled.
