A crossing guard was controlling traffic as the girl walked in the crosswalk on Spring Valley Road between Paramus High School and East Brook Middle School and was struck by a 2014 Hyundai Sonata just before 3 p.m., Police Chief Kenneth R. Ehrenberg said.

She was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center by Paramus EMS, he said.

Complaints were pending against the driver, identified as 60-year-old Janis Vahanian of Paramus, the chief said.

Police Traffic Safety Unit officers and department detectives were investigating, assisted by investigators from the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office, Ehrenberg said.

Borough police "were also greatly aided in managing the incident by the staff of the Paramus school system," he said.
