A safety mechanism locked the scaffolding after it began to tip just after 11 a.m., sending some debris to the ground at the Mack-Cali Centre III off East Ridgewood Avenue. The workers then waited for help, which arrived quickly.

“When it reaches a 5-degree tilt, the scaffold automatically shuts down to keep anyone from falling off,” Paramus Deputy Police Chief Robert Guidetti told CLIFFVIEW PILOT. “When this one shut down, it crashed into the window of the Smith-Barney suite.”

Using a tower ladder from Oradell, firefighters brought the workers — one, 45, from Parsippany and the other, 36, from Union City — safely to the roof.

No one was injured, Guidetti said.

“It was a bit cold up there,” he said. “Other than that, everyone was OK.”
