Police had received several reports of a hit a run just before 11:30 a.m. on May 6, Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir S. Grewal said.

Daniel Offield, 35, had “jumped on the hood of Ammara Chaudry’s vehicle in an apparent attempt to prevent [her] from leaving the area following a domestic dispute,” Grewal said.

A short distance later, Offield fell from the vehicle and was seriously injured, the prosecutor said.

Chaudry kept going and failed to notify authorities of the incident, he said.

Offield later was pronounced dead at St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in Paterson.

“A subsequent examination conducted by the Bergen County Medical Examiner’s Office revealed that Offield’s death was a direct result of the injuries suffered following the incident,” leading to the charges, Grewal said.

Chaudry turned herself in on Friday and was released pending a June 2 first appearance in Central Judicial Processing Court, he said.
