The chase began when Nutley officers attempted to stop Luis Garcia, 51, Lt. Robert Bracken said.

When Garica refused to stop, officers chased him until they reached Clifton, where they discontinued their pursuit, Bracken said.

Clifton Officers Adam Courtney and Joseph Picnarcik picked up the chase, he said.

They chased Garcia from River Road in Clifton onto westbound Route 3 and onto the northbound Garden State Parkway.

The pursuit continued onto Routes 80 and 4 and ultimately through several towns, including Ridgewood, Bracken said.

The chase ended after nearly 40 minutes in Paterson near Rosa Parks Boulevard when Garcia finally surrendered on a dead-end street, Bracken said.

Garcia was charged with eluding and possession of CDS paraphernalia. Bracken said authorities aren't why he fled.
