Chased by police, career shoplifter hit by car at Paramus mall

ONLY ON CVP: Among several people who spent Christmas in the Bergen County Jail on shoplifting charges was a 53-year-old career thief who Paramus police said slipped from his handcuffs and took off through the Garden State Plaza parking lot before being hit by a car.

Officers handcuffed Jorge Luis Duran after being called to a shoplifting at Macy’s just before dark on Christmas Eve, Lt. John Scully said.

“As officers were placing him in the rear of a police vehicle, Duran managed to slip out of one of the handcuffs and flee from the officers,” the lieutenant said.

As they chased him through the parking aisles, Duran was hit by a car.

The officers grabbed Duran, who wasn’t injured seriously, charged him with shoplifting and eluding police and took him to the county jail.

He was being held there on $10,000 bail.

It wasn’t the first time Duran has run from police: He took off and was caught after being snagged for shoplifting — also in Paramus, records show.

Duran’s criminal history includes several shoplifting convictions and drug offenses, as well as probation violations, records show.

He’d been arrested and released nearly two weeks ago on trespassing charges, also out of Paramus. This while awaiting trial on charges of receiving stolen property.
