PARAMUS, N.J. -- A Rutgers University graduate student from Paramus was charged with attempted murder and a Hillsdale classmate with aggravated assault after a stabbing, authorities aid.

New Brunswick police responding to a fight outside the Old Bay restaurant around 2 a.m. Friday arrested Michael Young, 24, of Paramus, and 23-year-old Joel Tomanelli, Capt. J.T. Miller said.

“Preliminary findings suggest alcohol and drugs were involved,” Miller said.

Young, a political science and history major, is charged with attempted murder and weapons offenses while Tomanelli, a mathematics major and Eagle Scout from Hillsdale’s Troop 108, is charged with aggravated assault, he said.

Pablo Mero-Cabrera, 31, was stabbed several times in the head and neck and was listed in stable condition at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick with injuries that weren't considered life-threatening, Miller said.

Annie Hodges, 24, of Spotswood, who was with Mero-Cabrera, was punched several times but not seriously injured, he said.
