Condolences continued to pour in to the family via social media on Thursday.
"Don Berman, Rosemarie Sciancalepore Berman," Yomaira Camacho Sanchez wrote to his parents. "I know that you are going through one of the most difficult times of your life and that the pain in your hearts is enormous.
"Sometimes life is unfair and robs us of the people we love the most. Sam was happy because he had parents who gave him all his love. Sam will always be in our hearts."
"I imagine there is no pain more far-reaching and deeper than losing a child," Grace DePalma added. "My heart and prayers go out to you at this most difficult time."
"Today I lost my sunshine... my beautiful boy," Sam's mom wrote on Wednesday.
"My heart is broken. Sam, my only wish for you is that you are at peace and your soul finds joy in paradise."
Sam, a 2016 Ramsey High School graduate, was a boys soccer team captain, as well as captain of the Ironbound Strikers.
The Ramsey Baseball Softball Association remembered him as "one of the best soccer players that this town has ever produced" in a Facebook post. "Sam was also a fine baseball player and a wonderful young man who will be missed tremendously."
