The Lamb Lies Down On Wilsey: Betsy Herded, Ridgewood Mattress Store Fined

RIDGEWOOD, N.J. -- Rather than prolong a wild and woolly saga, the owners of a Ridgewood mattress store have corralled a life-sized fiberglass sheep they'd kept in front of their shop.

"Otherwise we would have to shut the store down again for another court date," said Barbara Goodfriend of the Healthy Choice Organic Mattresses store, after a Municipal Court judge reduced a potential $250 fine to $93.

Betsy had beckoned passersby into the Wilsey Square store -- until local officials cited the owners for an "unapproved" display of a product outside the business, a village code violation.

Although to them it seemed much ado about mutton, the owners eventually relented out of shear frustration.

"She had her day in court," Goodfriend said. "Betsy was found guilty for loitering, grazing, sunbathing, etc. in front of our store.

"Being a peaceful and respectful soul, Betsy has agreed to remain indoors until the day the town ordinances allow her to once again roam free."

It's been an udderly ridiculous year for the ubiquitous ewe.

Earlier this year, she went missing from in front of the store after being left out overnight.
