McEllen's police cruiser hydroplaned on rain-slicked Route 17 and hit a utility pole, killing him, around 11 p.m. Oct. 3, 1976.

McEllen, a U.S. Army veteran who served in Vietnam, was survived by his wife and two children.

The Paramus Police Department asks that everyone take a moment to remember McEllen's sacrifice -- as well as others who have sacrificed their lives for the community and the nation.
