Simpkins, 19 of Newark, was found unresponsive with gunshot wounds in a car just before 12:30 a.m., the article says.
His former coach, Dan DeCongilio, posted a tweet in his memory:
"My prayers and thoughts are with Dyshawn's family. You will be missed big guy. It was a blessing that our paths crossed in life."
