BERGEN COUNTY, N.J. --  Americans are going to splurge a record $18.4 billion this year on Easter, according to the National Retail Federation.

That's a six percent increase on 2016's $17.3 billion, says a Statista report. This year's holiday falls later than last year, a key reason for the uptake in expenditure. That gives consumers a whole extra month to purchase chocolate eggs, cards and decorations, as well as warmer weather to look forward to.

Candy is tops on the list with 89 percent saying they plan to buy some. For those who like chocolate bunnies, there's this fun fact: 76 percent of Americans say they should be eaten ears first.

As for where folks will be shopping -- brick and mortar stores win out. This year, 58.3 percent of consumers will head to a discount store and 26.4 percent will shop at a local mom and pop compared to 26.8 percent who will shop online.
