My trip started in Ushuaia, Argentina. It is the southern-most and "last" city in the world. Our hotel was located in front of the beautiful snow-capped mountains of Ushuaia. Photo Credit: andrea Holmes
The next day we hopped on a boat for a two day trip thru the Drake Passage, going from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. These are the roughest waters in the world. Photo Credit: Andrea Holmes
Then we got off the main ship onto a Zodiac Boat to take us to the continent. I was told if you fall in you have two minutes before you go into hypothermia and croak. Photo Credit: Andrea Holmes
Some icebergs are blue. The color occurs mostly in very old ice from a very deep glacier and is the result hundreds or even thousands of years of compression and ongoing thawing and refreezing of the ice. Here we are going under this ice tunnel. Photo Credit: Andrea Holmes
I suited up in my son Bob’s old snowsuit from 15 years or so ago . . . Photo Credit: Andrea Holmes
Look at this old lady sitting on a seat cane on an iceberg. I took one look at her and said “that’s for me!!!” I bought one when I got back and it accompanies me everywhere. Photo Credit: Andrea Holmes
Penguins, penguins, penguins. They are supposed to mate for life. The prospective suitor gathers rocks for the female and she makes a nest with the rocks. The more rocks, the better. Just like keeping up with the Jones. Photo Credit: Andrea Holmes
If she is impressed with the large rock nest, she fornicates with the male and settles down in her large nest. The dad gathers more rocks to make her happy. Photo Credit: Andrea Holmes
One day the ship had a barbeque on deck; believe it or not it was warm enough to sit out on deck, enjoy barbecued ribs, great wine and great company while looking at icebergs. Photo Credit: Andrea Holmes
On the way out I snapped a picture of some seals loafing around. Antarctica is an amazing place! Photo Credit: Andrea Holmes
