HILLSDALE, N.J. — It's Thursday afternoon just after lunch and every chair in The Shave Bar and Barbershop in Hillsdale is filled.

Some of the guys are quietly scrolling on their Smartphones while others are chatting with their barbers.

The vibe is relaxed, yet professional — that's how owner Evan Vidal has kept it since opening in Spring 2015.

"For men, our hair is all we have," said Vidal of Rochelle Park. "Women can get their makeup, eyebrows or lashes done. Hair is important for a guy."

Starting a business of his own was a risk, Vidal said. But he couldn't see himself doing anything else since the first time he picked up clippers in seventh grade.

The barber spent his teens and 20s gaining experiencing at several local shops in the area including Exclusive Cuts and Main Street Barbershop in Hackensack, Cuts N Styles in Emerson and Michelle's Full Service in Woodcliff Lake.

"I've always had an artistic side," Vidal said. "Doing this allows me to create something. And with every person, it's different."

Vidal has three other barbers working at Shave Bar:

  • Mike Sebahie of Paramus
  • Stephen Bogosian of Garfield
  • Mike Aspinwall of White Plains

They have all gained a loyal following in Hillsdale and are known for their fades and shape-ups.

They cut many working professionals, such as police officers, who got their beards done for free following the No-Shave November fundraiser.

Ali Poury, 36, works in finance and says he's always has to look presentable, as he's in front of CEOs and other high-profile executives often.

He trusts Vidal with more than just his hair.

"There are times you tell your barber your deepest secrets," said Poury of Woodcliff Lake, from Vidal's barber chair.

"But when you come here you get consistency, cleanliness and convenience."

Cutting hair is more than just a business for Vidal.

"It makes a big difference when  you see guys come in and they haven't had a shave or a haircut in a while," the barber said. "By the time the haircut's done, the smiles start coming out.

"That's what I like most about it."
